Advantages of Wearable Wound Simulators:

Wearable wound simulators are crucial training tools designed to provide medical personnel and emergency responders with realistic wound treatment experiences. Here are the main advantages of using wearable wound simulators, along with the types of wounds they simulate:

  1. Realistic Training Environment:Wearable wound simulators offer highly realistic wound appearances and sensations, making the training experience closely resemble real-life situations, thus enhancing the trainees' ability to respond effectively in actual emergencies.
  2. Diverse Wound Types:Simulators can replicate various types of wounds, including lacerations, gunshot wounds, eviscerations, animal bites, and open fractures. This diversity helps trainees comprehensively improve their first aid and emergency response skills.
  3. Opportunity for Repeated Practice:Trainees can repeatedly practice their skills without causing any harm to real people. This repetition helps consolidate skills and improve reaction speed and accuracy.
  4. Safe Training Environment:Using simulators avoids the real pain and injury associated with training on live subjects, ensuring safety during the training process and allowing trainees to focus on learning and applying techniques.
  5. Immediate Feedback and Improvement:Simulators provide immediate feedback, allowing trainees to quickly understand the effectiveness of their actions and make necessary improvements, enhancing the overall effectiveness of the training.

Types of Wounds Simulated:

  • Lacerations:Simulate real lacerations to teach trainees how to clean, suture, and manage bleeding.
  • Gunshot Wounds::Provide simulations of different depths and shapes of gunshot wounds, allowing trainees to practice handling through-and-through wounds, controlling bleeding, and bandaging.
  • Evisceration:Simulate situations where internal organs are exposed, training trainees on how to safely manage and protect exposed organs and perform emergency bandaging.
  • Animal Bites and Scratches: Simulate various animal-inflicted injuries, teaching trainees how to clean wounds, prevent infections, and manage wound care.

  • Open Fractures:Provide simulations of open fractures, training trainees on how to stabilize the fracture site, control bleeding, and perform emergency care.

Functions:

  • Direct Pressure:
When practicing direct pressure on the model, it is important to locate the injured area and apply firm pressure using a hemostatic dressing above the wound to help slow the bleeding. Applying pressure requires a certain amount of force, but excessive force can cause further injury. Therefore, during direct pressure training, the rescuer needs to learn how to appropriately control the amount of force and pressure to effectively stop the bleeding without causing additional harm to the wound. Training can also include the use of an Israeli bandage.
  • Using a Tourniquet:
When heavy bleeding cannot be controlled or direct pressure is ineffective, using a tourniquet may be another effective method. When using a tourniquet on the forearm model, it should be placed above the injury site (closer to the heart), tightened until the bleeding completely stops, and then call for medical personnel to handle the wound. Proper use of a tourniquet is crucial to avoid further injury.
  • Wound Packing:
When dealing with deep, large, or junctional wounds (where the limb joins the body), consider using hemostatic packing techniques (junctional hemorrhage control). It is recommended to use gauze containing hemostatic agents. For model practice, regular gauze can be used. First, wrap the gauze around your finger several times to protect it from bone fragments. Then, insert the gauze into the wound in the direction closest to the heart and pack it tightly. After packing the wound, apply pressure above the wound to stop the bleeding. This technique requires repeated practice but is valuable for quickly managing various injuries and reducing blood loss. This technique is included in the TECC/TCCC training courses.
When adopting any other first aid techniques, it is essential to remain vigilant and receive proper training while being aware of potential risks and complications.
